Onto the final stage of our image, Hair and Post work.

As ZBrush 1.5 has now been released I am using screen shots from the new version. Anyone owning a licenced copy of ZBrush is entitled to an upgrade upto version 1.5 so everyone can take advantage.

1. ADDING HAIR

Having rendered your image you can now apply hair to the layer that contains the head. Go to the layers panel and select the layer that shows the little picture of the head.

Once on that layer you can BAKE the shading into that layer. This bakes the current render and shading mode into the base colours of the model on that layer.

use LAYERS>BAKE.

In 1.5 it can be found by clicking the little square icon in the top right hand corner of the panel.

Now that the image had the shading baked to a layer you can start to set up things for the hair. First of all choose a FLAT Material from the Material Panel.

Secondly choose a colour that will suit the model. In our case try white/gray.

Now choose the FIBER brush from the Tool panel

Again, using the small icon in the top right of the panel display the options for the FIBER BRUSH.
These controls will determine the look of the hair to be placed on our Purple Nasty's head. These include parameters for density, gravity, grooming, turbulance, thickness and shape.

As the FIBER tool is simply a BRUSH tool the next part is easy. Try adjusting some of the settings and spray the hair onto the model. See the examples below that use differing settings.

When you are happy with the style you need to save the document out by using:

DOCUMENT>EXPORT

Save the image as a PSD, Photoshop file ready for the next stage.

2. POST WORK WITH ZTOOLS

In the tool panel you will find an array of 2D brushes that can make all the difference to your images.

To begin working on the 2D image with these brushes you need to bring it into the document. Use:

DOCUMENT>IMPORT

With the image now loaded select a FLAT material and select one of the brushes listed above.

Work around the canvas using BLUR, SHADING ENHANCER, INTENSITY and SMUDGE as per figure 5.

TIP: Make sure the render is not still in BEST RENDER mode.

That brings to conclusion the full six tutorials for making a head in ZBrush. There are many ways to do things in ZBrush and I have given you a few ideas with a few of the tools avaialble. Try out all the panels and all the tools and if you make a cool image post it at the ZBrush Central Forum.
