Realistic Lighting Rig .
This tutorial will show you how to create a lighting rig that will simulate daytime lighting conditions. Most importantly, it will allow you to easily adjust the rig so you can reuse the rig in many different scenes. This tutorial was written by Andy Nicholas who is an experienced freelance artist and programmer.

Worm Hole.
Just about every Scifi show has some way of traveling faster then light. Otherwise it would take several hundred years to get anywhere which is a bit larger then the average attention span! One frequently used way of getting around in scifi is wormholes. Without getting into the nitty gritty of theoretical physics, a wormhole is essentially a shortcut through space and time. Now wormholes can be seen in everything from Star Trek to, well, more Star Trek. But for this tutorial, we're going to be focusing on recreating the wormhole effect from the Scifi Channel's Farscape. This tutorial is probably best for intermediate users and I'll be using LightWave 7.5, although anything above 6 should be fine. Most of the work will be done in Layout.

Blast off with Hypervoxels 2.0 .
Shortly following the release of HV1.0, NewTek introduced Hypervoxels 2.0. What a plugin! Not only can you create highly detailed HyperVoxel "solids", you can now create those puffy clouds youve always dreamed of. As an added bonus, you can actually fly through these clouds and maintain a high level of detail. I love the fact that the closer you get to the HyperVoxels, the more details emerge.

Inverse Kinematics In Lightwave.
Before you can use IK you must first have a firm grasp of how basic hierarchies are set up in Lightwave. Objects or bones are linked together by means of PARENTING to form the movable joints in a body...

A simple particle explosion..
I've noticed reading the newsgroups & such that a lot of people are interested in blowing things up!
Although Lightwave doesnt have a "bomb" button, you can make your own explosions that look a lot more realistic.
All it takes is imagination.

advanced glass setup.
fresh with the lightwave 7.5b update, newtek gave us a new gradient function called 'thickness'. since i prefer to work with gradients instead of plugins i started to play with this function to create nice looking glass. to speed up the things a little bit, i won't use lights, just a hdri as reflection/refraction enviroment.

Previsualization with the Poser Pro Pack and LightWave.
Curious Labs recently purchased rights to produce Poser from Metacreations and came out with Poser version 4, and added to it what they call the "Pro Pack," which makes several additions to Poser itself, along with supplying Poser scene/object import plugins for both NewTek's LightWave and Discreet's 3d studio max. Using this you can previsualize a bit of a scene in your 3d software and plan your shoot better... you can even use this to make storyboards and animatics for a scene.
